Act of Liberation:
In this piece, my intention was to draw a parallel to these overall sources of knowledge as embodiments of the very same destructive characteristics of the historical Book Burning. That language, education, history, literature, philosophy and the arts are the tools of domination, hate, power, control and corruption. This documented language has throughout time served to validate and secure a class and gender specific existence of power. The absence of women and men of a particular class in history is an important example and motivation in this piece. It is my firm belief that somewhere in history there was a farmer, maid, mother or laborer that had a profound thought. Historically revered leaders, scholars, artists and masters were often times born into this grandeur. The luxury of time and accessibility to a cyclical education afforded their placement and inclusion in the history books. This consistent pattern in history has implanted a very powerful notion that a particular kind of knowledge is sacred. Thus determining what is valuable and true. It is my conclusion that the stories told to generations past have documented an incomplete and perched perspective of a privileged ruling class.
